Wanted: hot nerd seeks dating coach.

Picture this – I’m ready to win back the love of my life, and I’m going big this time. We’re talking boom box, sing her name in the rain, let the whole damn neighborhood know I’m good and ready this time around. After all, if you’re going to grand gesture the ever-loving hell out of a second chance, you need to pull out all the stops.

There’s only one little problem.

My college girlfriend isn’t the one who shows up when I play my “I’ll do anything to win you back” tune. The woman who flings open the second-floor window tells me my ex doesn’t live here anymore. But she’ll help me win her back. Anything for romance, anything for a guy so willing to go big for love. And that’s what I want at first. Until I get to know my new “romance coach” and discover she’s funny, clever, and keeps me on my toes. Now I don’t want to win anyone else’s heart. I want the woman who’s been helping me all along. Trouble is – she thinks I’m in love with someone else, and when we take off on a road trip, everything I think I know about women is about to be unzipped and turned inside out.

***

He’s the last person I ever expected to pop into my life, but he might be exactly what I need to save the thing that matters most to me. All I have to do is not fall for him.

Unzipped is a standalone romance!

Review

*Review copy received as a part of a blog tour. The thoughts are entirely my own and in no way biased. *

Unzipped is the story of Tom & Finley, and how they meet in extenuating circumstances and decide to help each other get what they want. Tom, years after breaking up with his college girlfriend feels like he’s finally ready to make a commitment and so, he seeks her out, because she asked him to come find her when he had his “head on straight”. Equipped with advice from his well meaning, but clueless brothers, he shows up at his ex, Cassie’s apartment and plays a song on the boombox, a la Say Anything, hoping it’ll be the grand gesture that sends her running back into his arms.

But, who he actually serenades to is Finley, Cassie’s neighbour. Finley, who is on a deadline to come up with a funny story to tell in six episodes if she wants to save her dream show from being axed by the network that picked it up. I guess y’all can guess where this is going? Yes, Finley thinks that Tom is coming off too dorky and/or strong and decides to help him win back Cassie, and in the mean time, finds inspiration for her story.

As they spend more time together, they fall for each other, but does this mean they’ll get their Happily Ever After?

So, yes, a little cliche, but nonetheless interesting storyline that I absolutely adore. This is sort of a favourite trope of mine where the story begins with one of the MCs helping the other to win someone else over but then, these two end up falling for each other instead. I’ve always loved such stories, so picking this up was sort of a no brainer for me. And I’m glad I did!

This is such a cute, fun, quirky, and adorable story. You laugh out loud numerous times. Like, this story is in no way lacking in punch lines or one liners. I liked those a lot. And, I loved the banter – y, playful, flirtatious relationship Tom & Finley had that developed into more over the course of the story. Really, their back and forth and back and forth was really cute. I enjoyed that bit a lot. Even though I did feel like the puns and punch lines got a little too much after a while, because it felt like every conversation was littered with a lot of them and we could definitely have done with lesser of those.

Then, there’s the characters. Tom. Cute, sweet, adorkable nerd that he is, he has my heart. I loved how understanding and sweet he was. And then, reading about how he fell for Finley was just… It was awesome. Even though it started out as a mission to get Cassie back, he ended up falling for Finley and never did it feel like he was settling or that Finley was a rebound or second best. It just happened. He realised she was who he wanted to be with and I love that.

Then, there’s Finley. She’s smart as a whip and she’s always got a comeback for everything. I love how witty she is and her sense of humour is absolutely awesome. She’s one of the coolest female leads I’ve come across in sometime and I love her. One thing that I love most about her is how she was upfront with Tom about him and his story being her inspiration for her show. We always see in romance novels that one of the leads is struggling with their art and find inspiration in the other and translate that inspiration into their art but then everything goes to hell because the other lead thinks that all of it was a lie and a ploy to get the full story. But, that wasn’t the case here and I really, really, really love that!

The story kept me engaged from start to end with the plot and the characters and it was a really fun read! I’d definitely recommend it to fellow romance enthusiasts!

Excerpt

As I peruse the scenes, the opening notes of a song filter from the front of my townhome. What the hell? Did I leave the streaming app open on my phone? I step away from the counter and head to the front door, looking for my phone, even though I swear I had it with me in the kitchen.

The song grows louder, and it’s not coming from my cell at all. It’s coming from outside. I peer through the peephole.

I jerk back.

Rub my eyes.

What the hell?

Am I really seeing what I’m seeing? I don’t think I had that much wine. I had one sip.

Fine, fine. One large sip. One very large, very hearty sip. All right, it was a gulp.

But I can’t possibly be hallucinating, can I?

I peek again, and holy smokes.

There’s a guy on my front lawn going full Lloyd Dobler.

The hair on the back of my neck stands on end, and my paranoid brain leaps three thousand steps ahead. Did he escape from Alcatraz? Is he going to bang down my door? Attack me?

I pivot and grab the baseball bat I keep handy. As the youngest sister of two older brothers, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons: boys are trouble, pizza is good cold, and always keep a baseball bat near the door and/or bed.

With my bat in hand, I scurry to the kitchen to grab my phone, then fly upstairs to the bedroom, taking the steps two by two.

I race into the bedroom, set the bat at my feet, and keep my phone clutched in my hand, ready to call 911 if need be. I pull back the white curtain a smidge.

And I nearly die laughing.

The song has stopped, and the Dobler wannabe is now kneeling on the ground, furiously hitting buttons on the boom box.

I peer around the curtain’s edge, and it’s like watching a sideshow act auditioning for my circus.

He hoists the boom box up above him again. A new tune plays. I cock my head, listening, and I cringe when I recognize the tune.

For real? Is he truly playing “Unzipped”? I could never stand that song when it was popular eight years ago. The music sounds like a can opener mating with a trombone. I wish he were playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” like Dobler did in the film.

But as I study the bizarre suburban male mating ritual, I decide to award him points for sheer balls. He also deserves bonus points because he chose to go without the super cheesy trench coat that Dobler wore. It worked for Cusack, but on anyone else that attire screams serial killer.

This guy seems harmless.

And admittedly, from my vantage point two stories above, he’s kind of handsome with the glasses, the thick, floppy hair, and the jeans that fit nicely. Strong jaw too.

Fine, fine. He’s more than kind of handsome. He’s 100 percent good-looking, in that hot nerd kind of way.

30653853

Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love—she’s lived through it twenty-six times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. Will is funny and flirtatious and just might be perfect crush material. Maybe more than crush material. And if Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker Reid. He’s an awkward Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him. Right?

When Dimple Met Rishi, Sandhya Menon – Book Review

1459165497497

28458598A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

25894369Clementine Daly knows she’s the black sheep. Her wealthy, powerful family has watched her very closely since she almostgot caught in an embarrassing scandal a few years ago. So when Clementine’s sent on a mission to live up to the Daly name, politely declining isn’t even an option. Despite all the hassles, Justin Mueller is intrigued to realize that the beautiful brown-eyed girl he met at the airport is suddenly at his fingertips. They agree to exchange phones when they’re both back in town, but after a week of flirty texts and wonderfully intimate conversations, Justin doesn’t want to let her go that easy. The only problem? Okay, so this one was a tough call. I mean, this book is really full of mixed feelings for me, because on the one hand, there’s stuff which is absolutely awesome! But, at the same time, the story isn’t all that appealing and falls into a rut midway through.

Like, I love how Clementine is a book blogger! (Go her! I especially love that part!) And I love the whole falling – in – love – on – the – phone thing. It just gives you the cutesy, adorkable, fuzzy, happily ever after feeling. So badly. The romance is super cute and absolutely adorable. That is the only good thing about this book.

Other than that, the only conflict in the book is how Clementine is insecure, how she is not ready, how she doesn’t know what to do… blah blah blah. The ‘me’ conflict in the book is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo dragged out and so huge and boring! Clemetine comes off as a whiny ass more often than not and all her problems seem to be in her head or self inflicted.

Like, take out her insecurities from the equation, and there is nothing that is stopping her from doing anything. I understand that insecurity and self doubt is ingrained in the human brain so deeply that there is no escaping it, but it seems to be overdone here, which I hate. Most of the things seem illogical and you just get so frustrated at her for being the way she is at times.

Like, girl, you would benefit so much if you just got out of your head!

But, like I said, the romance is so cute! And like a – dorable! Just squishy and fuzzy and huggy!

All in all, this was a pretty decent read and yeah. That’s it. It was a decent read. 🙂

Ellie Cahill is the author of When Joss Met Matt, Call Me Maybe (2016), and Just a Girl (2016). Ellie is also the not-at-all secret pen name of Young Adult author Liz Czukas(Ask Again Later, and Top Ten Clues You’re Clueless). Liz’s books are often compared to John Hughes movies, while Ellie usually gets compared to Nora Ephron. Either way, if you like a good 80s rom-com, you’ve found the right place. When they’re not writing fun, funny romances full of shenanigans and awkward kisses, Liz and Ellie are at home with their family and a golden retriever with different ideas about the definition of “dog bed.”

Rescued, Phoebe Rose – Blog Tour

Welcome to my tour stop for Rescued by Phoebe Rose. Rescued is a New Adult romance with snark, witty banter, and kittens. Can be read as a standalone. It is rated 18+.

1459165497497

Thomas is a hot geek, a twenty-three year old entrepreneur with no time for dating…and even less time to deal with the stray kittens who’ve claimed his patio as their home. Seattle college senior Tessa is a born rescuer, warm and caring–and sick of getting her heart bruised by guys like Thomas. But when he sees her rescue a kitten while wearing kitten heels, he’d do anything to kiss her. And while Tessa vows she’ll never let herself fall for a sexy, ambitious businessman, she fears she’s already in over her head.

1459165556078
This book is good. I like it. I mean, the story is not something that is new, but the writing is great. The way the characters are portrayed – their behavior, their personality, their emotions – it’s what makes it great. I like the quirkiness and the smart, sarcastic vibe that is there in this book the entire time.
The characters are really, really good. I like Tessa so much! She’s this ball of sarcasm and wit wrapped into procrastination and warmth and kindness who just demands to be loved by the reader. She’s a little insecure and a whole lot naive, but she is absolutely awesome! I love her. Really, I do. She’s such an amazing person. Kind and forgiving and loving. Always there to help her friends. Rescuing animals. Yeah, she’s great! 😀
Thomas is also real nice. He’s smart and stupid intelligent. Yes, I know that they’re opposites. I mean, he’s really, really intelligent. He’s younger than 25 and has already sold two of his start ups and is the CEO of his third. So, yeah crazy intelligent. He’s snarky and possessive and protective and just amazing. He’s super adorable and just melts your heart!
Like I said, the writing is what drew me in. The story is fast paced and doesn’t make you wait and doesn’t bore you. Which I like. I just wish that there had been a chapter or two before the epilogue. Seriously, the ending was a little rushed. I wanted to see more of the conflict resolution than what was shown. If the author would have done that, this book would have been so much better than what it is now. True story.
But, apart from that one issue I seem to have with this story, everything else is great! It really, really is! I loved it! So, so much! Makes your heart melt and smile so damn bad.
A definite recommendation for a light hearted, cutesy read on a weekend! 🙂

Wasted Words, Staci Hart – Release Day Review

Wasted Words Ebook Cover

Some universal truths refuse to be ignored.

Peanut butter and jelly are a match made in heaven. Spaghetti and meatballs are best friends forever. And guys like Tyler Knight don’t go for girls like Cam Emerson.

She knew from the second she met him that he didn’t belong on her bookshelf, the six-foot-six ex-tight end with a face so all-American, it could have sold apple pie. So she shelved him next to the supermodels and rock stars and took her place on her own shelf — the one with the flannel-clad, pasty-faced comic book nerds. Most of her boyfriends have existed between the pages of books, but rather than worrying over her own lacking love life, she puts all her energy into playing Cupid, using her job at the book bar, Wasted Words, as her stomping ground.

Tyler Knight always looks on the bright side. His career-ending injury turned into a job as a sports agent. A horrible breakup led him to Cam, his quirky, smart roommate who is far more beautiful than she realizes. She’s made it perfectly clear she’s not interested in him — not like that at least — but if she ever changes her mind, he won’t hesitate. Because he doesn’t see the lines she’s drawn between them, as much as she insists that they’re there. Deep down he knows that despite their differences, they’re a match well made.

*A romantic comedy inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma*

This story! Oh my GOD! I love this book! I really, really do! It is so amazing! I just don’t have the words to describe how amazing it is! I am in love with this story and that is all there is to it, really.

13217090_1101914386535091_3071549823033198216_o

It is a friends to something more romance and I love those! It’s just so heartwarming to see two friends who are so comfortable with each other realize that their feelings run deeper and then explore the same. I love the feel of it. The awkwardness, the shy adorableness that is prevalent in such situations, all of it! So, yeah, I love this story because this provides exactly that to the readers.

13096146_1095553570504506_1453042835198814040_n

Cam and Tyler are such amazing friends and seeing their relationship morph into more is amazing. They already know each other so well – their likes and dislikes and wants and needs. So, it is really great how they just dive into a relationship once they realize how they feel about each other. Of course, they do dance around a little, afraid that it might ruin their friendship, but then they persevere through. Thankfully!

13147807_1099315763461620_1976299630659158464_o

Of the two of them, it is definitely Cam who needs the reassuring that all is going to be fine. And Tyler does such an amazing job of it. He is there with her, every step of the way, holding her, guiding her and making her believe that what they have is real and that is what he wants. He’s just so, so, so very amazing, I don’t have the words to say. I adore him, plain and simple. He makes me laugh and he makes me smile and he makes me fall in love with him. He is cute and adorable and loving and caring and also sexy and beautiful. Who wouldn’t fall for him? He’s just really amazing.

13179328_1101274109932452_7908858380268583829_n

Cam, on the other hand, I identified a lot with her. She’s a bookworm, always reading something or the other, her nose buried in a book, not unlike me. She’s sort of shy and reserved when it comes to her own love life but loves playing matchmaker to others. She’s witty and feisty which I absolutely love. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself, but she also doubts herself in the capacity that she doesn’t believe that Tyler can stay with her for a long time. Her fears come from a deep seated place inside of her and until you know her story, you may think that she’s being unnecessarily pushy about the whole thing and unreasonably insecure when it comes to Tyler. The struggles that she faces may seem unimportant but they’re truthful. Many people face the circumstances as her and that’s what makes this relatable.

Do I wish she hadn’t been so hasty in making some decisions? Yes.

But after reading the story do I understand why she did it? Completely.

13096017_1096877683705428_4923855061935539774_n

All in all, this is one amazing, kickass read that is a must for all romance lovers out there! Staci Hart is absolutely brilliant at what she does and if you’ve not read her books, you’re seriously missing out. Like, seriously!

Go read this, now! And fall in love with Tyler. Deeply and irrevocably. ❤

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.

Hopelessly Imperfect, Gabriela Cabezut – Book Review

1459165497497

30161393Cancer is a beast. It’s ugly, savage, and has no mercy. Cassie learned this all too well while watching her mother slowly deteriorate, one agonizing day at a time… With the desire to make her mother’s last year the best it can be, she works to be the perfect daughter. Every character trait, witty joke, like and dislike-Cassie molds herself to be what her mother would love most. But in the end, it still isn’t enough… After years of pretending, Cassie has no idea who she really is. When her mother slips away, Cassie falls into a deep depression, and thoughts of suicide become her most pressing threat. After a failed attempt, she seeks help, and is eventually able to return to life at home. Going through senior year as the girl whose mom died sucks… With her father picking up the pieces of his own heart, and Cassie back in school, she’s able to make a few new friends-one of them being Nathan Rivers. First of all, HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY, GABY! This is awesome! I am so, so, so happy for you! 😀

Gaby is a totally awesome person and I am really, really happy that she’s finally getting this platform to reach out to such a huge audience. You go, Gaby! 😀

Talking about the story, now that celebrations are over, it is a great read. Both the main characters are going through stuff in their life that are not easy to deal with. Cancer, depression, death. And that is just the beginning. There’s so much more to their stories. So much that they keep hidden. So much that needs to be said. So much pain to get off their chest, but they’re not doing that. Why? Because they’re guilty. And that makes me really, really sad.

The plethora of emotions brought to life in this story is insane. There’s so much to unearth. Happiness, sadness, guilt, pain, depression, growing up, moving on. All of this is a part of the story. And, it is expressed just so beautifully it makes your heart ache.

I love each and every bit of this story. From the beginning right up to the end. Cassie is such a strong person. She really is. After everything that she has been through, I am so proud of her. Yes, there are times that I felt she was a little too whiny, but going back to thinking what she’s been through, I can understand her moods better. She’s just trying to find herself and let go off all the pain she’s been feeling these past few years and I definitely sympathize with her. I think that what she’s doing is amazing. She’s getting better. And that, is great. Really, really great.

Nathan, the male lead, is just simply amazing. Yes, he’s got the bad boy thing going for him and he behaves like a typical YA hero, all broody and jealous and mysterious. In the beginning. But, as time passes and Cass spends more time with Nate, Nate uncovers himself just beautifully. He’s such an amazing soul. He’s kind and gentle and so, so, so loving. He’s been looking after Cass even before she realized he was even there and he’s just always trying his best to make her feel better. He’s fighting his own demons, but he’s getting there. And there’s just something so incredibly honest about him, you can’t help but love him. Really, honest to God love him.

The story is absolutely compelling and beautiful and the characters are AMAZING! This book should be added to your TBR ASAP because you need to read it!

25819497Aspiring love charm maker Hijiri Kitamura was excited to come back to Grimbaud for her sophomore year-until she learns about the upcoming charm making competition. Grimbaud has just started to recover from the tyranny of Zita’s love fortunes and it would be too easy for the winning charm maker to take Zita’s place. The only solution is for Hijiri, with the support of her friends and fellow rebels, to win the contest herself.

Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done, especially when Love itself has decided to meddle in Hijiri’s life. Concerned that it’s favorite charm maker has given up on finding a boyfriend of her own, Love takes matters into its own hands and delivers the perfect boyfriend to her in a giftwrapped box…literally.

Okay, so let’s be honest here. All three covers of Kim’s books are adorable! Like we all know, I only read this book because I loved the cover so much. (If you don’t, you should check my review for Love Charms and Other Disasters – Love Fortunes and Other Disaster, Kimberly Kiralius – Book Review. And now that that shameless part of self promotion is done, we can move on!)

I absolutely loved this book! It is so adorable. And it’s filled with the cutesy, adorable, smitten feeling all through the story. It starts with Hijiri, the heroine, finding a huge gift box on her doorstep. And, her gift is a boy. A live, breathing boy. Tailor made for her by Love himself. One who loves Hijiri so much already!

Hijiri, like any sane person, is befuddled and shocked at this. She can’t stomach the fact that this boy is in fact a charm. And so starts her mission to solve him, like he’s a puzzle and to prove to Love that she can solve him without falling for him.

“I don’t know what to do with you.”

“That’s okay, I’ll be here when you do.”

It doesn’t help that Ken is all sorts of charming and perfectly right for Hijiri. Of course he is. Love made him just for her. He’s smart and cute. He’s so sweet and caring and loving and I just ADORE HIM SO MUCH!!!! ❤

giphy

I just really, really, really adore him! Ken is like the perfect boy. *sighs*

He’s always there for Hijiri whenever she needs a friend, a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand, a believer, anything. He can be anything and everything she needs and that just makes my heart melt. Like, he’s not perfect, of course. But he might as well be. For Hijiri, he is. And that is all that matters.

We must look like two halves of a heart.

The character development for Hijiri is definitely super outstanding. I love how she comes into her own as a person and as a character through the course of the story. She was a timid, shy girl who didn’t really talk much in book one. Then, she made some friends and she spearheaded her friends to victory in the charm making competition and she fell in love. She’s absolutely brilliant. Really. I identify with her a lot in the sense that I am always looking for Happily Ever Afters for others but I don’t really believe that I have one out there. Just like Hijiri. But, her story gets a Happily Ever After and that makes me thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could to. (I’m not really holding my breath for that one. Because I’m not convinced still. Not really.) But, she did find hers and that is what is important.

It makes me believe that our hearts can be tangled and tied to each other no matter how far away we are or how much time passes between.

The setting of the story is absolutely awesome. Grimbaud is facing an identity crisis after Zita’s fall and the town is desperate for another love charm maker to take over. So, of course, there’s a competition to chose who can take over. And, obviously, Hijiri and the charm theory club are participating. There was such a competitive edge in the story. I loved it. All the tests and the quizzes and competitions were amazing. Of course, I absolutely loved Hijiri’s take on all the tasks, how she went about them, what questions she asked, what charms she made, they were truly unique and breathtaking. I loved them all. It shows us just how much Hijiri understands love and what is important when it comes to love.

To keep holding his hand. To feel his arms around her. To laugh at his dorky sweaters and bulky backpack. To know what kissing Ken would feel like. Loving Ken was like dreaming.

The development of the other characters was also done really beautifully in the story. I loved the homey edge that surrounded Fallon and Sebastian. After everything they’d been through, those two deserved it more than anyone else. And, I loved seeing them that way. All loved up and in bliss. ❤

Nico and Martin are taking there relationship forward and those two are just totally remarkably adorable. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows for them, but they’re working through their issues and seeing them so devoted to each other is really heartwarming.

And then, there’s the twins. For the first time, they’re stepping in uncharted territory. They’re having differences of opinion and fighting. That was really refreshing to read. It was also very uncomfortable and daunting. I was just wishing wishing wishing for them to get past their differences and be the sisters I knew them to be. Of course they did that, but it took sometime before their issues were resolved and seeing them that way was sort of eye opening.

“What does our home look like?”

“It’s made of charms. Not very sturdy.”

“Ah! So we are building one together. And here I thought I was the only one working on this relationship.”

All in all, Love Charms is an amazing read and definitely lives up to the expectations I’d set after reading the first one. It’s love and happiness and struggling and finding each other despite all the differences in the world and just being there for your friends and your family and always, always, always opening your heart to love. It’s believing that there is someone in this world, who is made just for you, no matter what else you might think, because it’s true.

“You fell in love with me. Twice. How?”

“I don’t think I can put that answer into words.”

I totally suggest all you guys to go grab this book and read it right now because it is so effing amazing!

“My heart blushes whenever I’m around you.”

In Kimberly Karalius’s First Kisses and Other Misfortunes, two boys discover that true love is harder than it looks, even in the charming town of Grimbaud, in this lovely novella from the author of Love Fortunes and Other Disasters.

Nico is worried. Again. After freeing Martin from the illegal love charms of his evil ex-girlfriend, Nico was sure that their love would be the perfect romance he’d been waiting for. But it’s been months and Nico’s still waiting for his first kiss. Between Martin’s dedication to student government and Nico’s responsibilities at his family’s tourism business, there’s been no time for romance or kisses. Fortunately, the Canal Festival is coming up and like all Grimbaud events, it will be filled with romance…especially the Water Parade, Nico’s favorite part. And this year, Nico will be the captain of his own small boat! It’s the perfect opportunity for a romantic (and hopefully kiss-filled) date with his boyfriend. There’s just one small problem: Martin is afraid of drowning. Will Nico’s dreams of a romantic first kiss be sunk before they are even launched?
