A Murder in Gurgaon, Manish Dubey – Book Review

1459165497497

32316637Gurgaon. December 2014. A young event manager, an ex-cop’s son, is murdered. Inspector Hawa Singh vows justice. There is little to begin with, and frustration mounts when the initial suspect – a reclusive woman with a mysterious past – is found missing. Digging deeper, Singh uncovers a sordid tale of adultery, blackmail and revenge, only to find himself staring at a conspiracy unlike any he has seen. There are deceits, little and big, to decode; the predator and victim are indistinguishable; his witnesses could be misleading; his closest ally may not be an ally at all. Will Singh succeed? Or has the sick, wily mind behind the crime always been a few steps ahead? Refreshingly told, with a cast of morally ambivalent characters and an accent on the minutiae of crime, A Murder in Gurgaon will keep you hooked till the very end.

A Murder In Gurgaon is the story of the murder of a 30 something man in his own house and the disappearance of one lady after she met with her friend and told her she had ‘business’ to take care of.

The story is part narrative, part novel and part play. The author does not follow a single method of story telling and I think that that is a refreshing change. The plot is the main attraction of the story. The characters are just tools to forward the plot and there isn’t any character development. Just conversations and incidents that lead from the murder to finding the culprit.

As a whole, the story is intriguing and interesting and keeps you hooked. It did feel like a CID episode at times, though. The end certainly felt like it. the fact that I disliked the most is that the investigating officer didn’t have to dig around to reach the conclusion as to who was the killer. It was like one of those episodes of Castle where he spouts an unbelievable theory that proves to be the actual happening in the end, coincidentally. Also, the promise twist at the end of Part II is never mentioned in Part III and the novel ends. I was expecting something there, but it didn’t happen and that was a little disappointing.

What I like is how the mystery unfolds. I didn’t guess the ending until the end thought when it happened, it seemed too obvious once I went back to the beginning and went over it. I guess, that is what makes it so good. The culprit is right in front of you, they’re the obvious choice and you still don’t suspect them for reasons unknown. Then you realise it’s them and feel stupid for not thinking about it in the first place!

All in all, it’s a pretty riveting read and it grips you till the end. I like the mystery and the whodunnit guessing till it was revealed because there was one prime suspect and then there wasn’t and someone else was the actual culprit and shit kept happening that made me believe it was someone but it wasn’t. So, yeah. I really liked that part!

I can safely say that this book is one of the most eccentric and different books that I have read till date. It is a unique mixture of romance, fantasy, sci – fi, mystery and thriller all wrapped into one totally awesome package for you to read and amaze at.

Apart from the distinct plot of the book, the writing is simply amazing. I love it! The way the author brings out the various plot lines, the emotions, the setting – it is all amazing. And so amazingly done. It is beautiful and lovely and just so awesome. (I feel like I am out of words with this! :P)

But seriously, it is just so awesomely done, I do not have any other words to describe it. The characters are amazing, the setting is phenomenal and the plot is mind blowing. So, there is little to none that is to hate about this book. It has so many elements that readers of each genre can find something for them in this book.

And, the best part is that nothing is overdone, which makes the reader appreciate all that is tried to be projected in the book. I love how we’re left guessing till the end of the book and the mystery is only properly unraveled in the end. Also, the chemistry is absolutely sizzling. Hunter and Aeris. Oh MYYYYYYYYYY!!!! It is just so… oooohhhhh! I do not have proper words to describe it!

All in all, this is one kickass book that definitely needs your love!

This is an interesting story full of conspiracy theories. What I liked most about this story was that it kept you guessing till the end as to what would happen. It is full of people double crossing each other for their own benefits and you just cannot trust one person. They’ll try to help you one moment and then try to kill you the next. So, yeah, a lot of betrayals. I love them!

The flow of the writing in this one is free and methodical. Nothing is out of place. The jumping points of view can be confusing and annoying, if not done well. But, that is not the case in this one. The way that the story is written, it’s pretty easy to understand what is happening when and which character is it focusing on.

It is a pretty well written piece of literature that you must definitely read!

The only thing that I didn’t like about it is the Dan Brown – esque feel that this story has. At many points, I felt that it was a Dan Brown novel and not someone else’s. The individuality of the author was lost at times and that was a definite negative point to this story.

Other than that, the portrayals, the reference and the characterization is done brilliantly. I love how all the Biblical references are made. All characters have a defined, unique voice in the narrative. The plot is amazing.

Long story short, if you are a fan of Dan Brown, particularly the Robert Langdon series, then Aiden Leonardo is the man for you!

While I was working backstage later that evening, I heard a few new guests entering the premises. One was K.L., and the other was Ella Green. Ella Green was well known for her publicity stunts and her YouTube videos. Although I had never seen one, I was pretty sure she was here to interview the band. As for K.L., he was here for the same reason he was
at the diner where we had lunch: to reel me into his world. I refused, knowing that
wouldn’t stop him from trying again.

“Frances, can you take Ms. Green and Mr. James to the green room?” one roadie asked me. I threw the towel I was haphazardly folding to the side, and I went to guide Ella and K.L. to the green room.

When we got there Ben was celebrating something, and he wanted me to hear it. He showed me the invitation that had been waiting for them when they got here. It was for the American Music Awards in November, and when I saw that he and the band were nominated for an award, I was just as giddy with excitement as the whole lot of them. Ben and I hugged and jumped up and down, squealing in excitement.

After we came back to our senses I said, “Oh, guys Ella Green and K.L are here.” The sound of Ella’s name struck a fire in Ben. Not a good fire either.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

Ella was suddenly screaming at Ben. I was so confused, and so when Ella kept yelling, I yelled over her.

“Shut up! What the hell is going on?” I asked.

Ben waved his hand, signaling that I should leave this alone and I ignored him.

“Don’t you know?” Ella said. “I wanted to date the wonderful Ben Morrison, but he refused. He refused! Like, who refuses to date me? I’m Ella Green for Christ’s sake, I’m the mother—”

“It’s time to shut up, Ella. I can see your ego loud and clear.” She gasped at my comment, more enraged that I even spoke to her during her outburst than the fact that my brother had refused her invitation.

“Who are you? Like, what are you even doing here? You were folding towels when I came
in, you’re a little good for nothing—”

It was a reflex, and I mean it when I say this—but I punched her in the nose. Usually I’m pretty good at controlling my anger, and other times I don’t realize how angry I am and my reflexes take over. She was wailing like a child, and holding her head back as she stumbled around as if my punch to her nose had debilitated her ability to maintain her balance.

“Dammit, Frances! Do you know who she is?” Ben was yelling at me now, and I didn’t
know how to react. He was rushing to get towels and ice for Ella.

After a medic checked her nose and said it was fine, she was escorted off the premises, all the while shouting about how I was going to pay for this. I was like a child stuck in the time out corner when Ben came back. My arms were wrapped around myself for safety, and I hung my head in shame.
“What are you doing, Bea? Do you want to get us into trouble? She’s a YouTube star. She could easily post a rant about this and make it go viral overnight!”

It was time to prepare for the show, and I tried to leave, except Ben wouldn’t stop yelling.

“Frances, if you keep screwing things up the way you are, I’m going to regret ever bringing you on this tour! How can I show the world how wonderful my sister is if she keeps acting like a whiny, spoiled brat with an uncontrollable right hook?”

I could tell Everett was about to call him out on his behavior, but I shot him a look that told him not to.

“I’m sorry, Ben, it won’t happen again. I’ll go back to folding towels.” I had never been so
isolated and demeaned in my life. So much for sibling love.

Pretty Little Wherewolf

“Whatever, Di. Help if you must, but don’t baby me.”

If Di heard her, she didn’t respond. Not that Giselle needed verbal confirmation; she turned back around and slammed her locker shut without looking, and then stumbled straight into something… someone… hard.

“Oh, sorry,” Giselle mumbled, trying to steady herself. She hadn’t caught the scent until after she looked up and saw who she’d almost knocked down – or, well, collided with. She couldn’t have knocked him down if she’d tried.

Hello, Boy!

He was magnificent. Was every guy in this school a male model? Towering over her at well above six foot, with muscles that went on for days, he was built like a statue with a hard jaw and stone-cold eyes to match. Though his looks were definitely worth paying attention to, it was his smell that had her standing dumbfounded. In all the years since she’d first experienced the change, she had never run into anyone like her. Now, standing here right in front of her was yet another wolf. She’d thought the lingering scent of wet earth might have been left in Di’s wake, but the longer he stood here, looking down at her, the stronger the smell got.

“Do you have a problem?” he asked with a voice that complemented that spectacular body of his. Smooth and deep. Seriously… what a package. Her wolf was definitely at attention and begging for a second to come to the surface for a closer inspection. It was all she could do not to wolf out right there in the hallway, with all the students around to see. Yeah. That would make for a great first impression.

Hiya, everyone… I’m the new girl, and… oh, yeah, and I’m a wolf, too. She might as well tape an old “Kick me” sign on her back; it would be less conspicuous.

While she was practically drooling where she stood, the strange boy, wolf, man –whatever he was – looked positively murderous. “Are you going to stand here all day, or can I get to my locker?”

So much for making a good first impression on him. “Sorry.” Giselle cleared her throat, wanting to say something smart, but for once, she didn’t have the words. She sidestepped sheepishly, and enjoyed the back view of him as he brushed past her to his own locker.

Damn. Nice butt.

Her wolf agreed, too. Wonder what his wolf looks like. I’ll show you mine if you show me yours! She couldn’t help but stare. How often did she run into other wolves? Male wolves.

Other Side of Forever

“Allie, why do you hate me so much?” he asked softly as he stared into the sky.

His question took me by surprise. Did he really think that?

“I…I don’t hate you, Ethan.” I stumbled over my words. “I barely know you.”

“Then why do you try so hard to avoid me?”

“I don’t,” I lied, knowing that I did, but not in a mean type of way. I closed my eyes and sighed, wishing he didn’t have to ask so many questions. Couldn’t he just go back to saying nothing at all?

“You do,” he argued. I could hear the change in his voice. He was smiling.

“No. I don’t,” I answered sarcastically. His persistence was pinching my nerves.

“Then look at me,” he challenged.

Without thinking, I turned my head and looked at him. His warm, sweet breath blew against my face as he exhaled. The scent of peppermint. His dark eyes snatched me up and whisked me away. I was lost and unprepared as he drew me deeper and deeper inside him. The walls he created around me were getting higher and harder to climb. Like I had slipped into a trench and I was sinking into the earth.

Ethan pressed forward, attempting to close the gap between us. His lips were so close to mine I could feel the heat emanating from them. And just as our lips were about to brush, the voice in my head begged and pleaded and screamed for me to stop.

Then I turned away.

“Jones,” Knox taunted, drawing out my last name. “Are you going to take this or are you wrestling with the ethics of stealing my work?”
Without dropping my gun, I grabbed it with my free hand, but he didn’t release it. Locked in a silent battle, I heard Representative Lang’s scratchy voice outside the office door. My head whipped to the side. Dammit! I hadn’t fully closed the door.
What is wrong with me tonight? I’m not thinking clearly.
Knox closed the space between us, his face mere inches from mine and one side of his mouth hooked upward. A jolt of electricity arced between us. My blood felt like lava in my veins. He angled his head toward the cracked door. “An amateur mistake, don’t you think?”
“Fuck you,” I whispered, but I could hardly hear my words over the frantic swoosh of blood through my ears. My carefully crafted plans were going to blow up in my face. If I lowered my gun, Knox could take advantage of the moment and walk out of here with the memory stick. If I kept my gun aimed at Knox, I’d end up spending the night in jail, and I’d have to call Miles for bail money. I’d almost rather rot in prison than tell him I messed up. Sure, he was my boss, but that didn’t mean I wanted to interact with him any more than absolutely necessary. Our relationship was dicey these days.
“I see your wheels spinning, but there’s only one way we’re going to get out of this now.”
My dark eyes his clashed with his in a silent battle. “What do you have in mind?”
“We’re going to put on a good show,” he said, his warm breath tickling my face and sending shivers down my spine.
Electricity zigzagged through the air like a thunderstorm gathering strength on the edge of the horizon. My fingers involuntary twitched with the urge to sweep through his disheveled blond hair. He looked downright dreamy as his deep sapphire eyes zeroed in on my mouth. Before my mind registered his intent, he was kissing me.

A new Cormoran Strike novel? Yes, color me excited!

week-in-review-robert-pattinson-gifs-divergent-music.gif

Yes, it took me a long time to read this one, but it was only because I can’t not read Cormoran Strike in one sitting and I haven’t had the time to do that until yesterday. And, I’m so glad I waited till I could do it in one sitting, because otherwise the suspense would have eaten me alive.

The story starts with Robin receiving a severed leg in the mail addressed to Cormoran. From there, they go on a wild goose chase to find the killer, chasing three suspects who weren’t on the priority list of the police task force.

As far as plots go, this is one engaging and enticing baby. There are so many plot twists, turns and sub plots that you can not keep the book down without knowing. You most certainly can not.

And, it is not just a good story in terms of the suspense, but also has an engaging personal angle. The dynamics of Robin’s relationship with Strike and Matthew, both, change drastically and are a complete roller coaster ride.

All in all, the story is absolutely amazing. I love all the twists. The character development in this one is absolutely freakin’ shit amazing. The way that Robin and Strike’s past comes into play gives us so much more insight into them as people. And as we understand them on a more personal level, the level of connect and understanding that builds for these two characters is amazing.

I’m much too amateur to be making comments about the writing of someone as skilled and amazing as this one author who I worship, but I’ve tried.

Now, to look forward to the next adventure with Strike and Robin!

Forward up!
